Coping and mental health in early adolescence

Article Abstract:

The techniques of social adaptability of Swiss and American adolescents are quite similar. This was deduced from a study undertaken to analyse the process of adjustment in these individuals. It was found that coping often has direct impact on their psychological and mental health. However the strategies followed by the girls are quite different from those adopted by the boys. The girls resort to social dependence and develop a pessimistic outlook in the face of adversity. The boys have a more positive approach and indulge themselves in creative pursuits.

The effects of family structure and SES on family processes in early adolescence

Article Abstract:

Family conflict rises in early adolescence in African-American, Euro-American and Mexican-American families, according to research undertaken among 7,595 adolescents. It appears that family conflict is a normative element of early adolescent development. In all three groups, there were small but important differences between single-parent and nuclear families. Socio-economic status was not a key element in this study, but single mothers often highlight low income as a significant problem.
