Countering bullying at an Australian secondary school with students as helpers

Article Abstract:

Staff and students at a secondary school in Australia have cooperated to develop and implement policies to tackle bullying. Students completed questionnaires in 1995 and 1997. Students from Years 7 to 11 were assessed, and only those from Year 7 reported a major drop in victimizations. There was a significant rise in support for initiatives against bullying from older students in Years 10 and 11. The students most favored anti-bullying activities that they themselves had directed and carried out.

Peer involvement in bullying: insights and challenges for intervention

Article Abstract:

A study of playground bullying used fifty three videotape segments which have been analyzed to assess the extent to which peers intervene on behalf of bullies or victims. Older boys were found to be more likely to intervene on behalf of bullies than were older girls or younger boys, and older and younger girls were more likely to try to help victims than were older boys. Peers play a major role in bullying. There is a need for anti-bullying programs to address the school as a whole.
