Deliberate self-harm in adolescents: hopelessness, depression, problems and problem solving
Article Abstract:
Adolescents involved in deliberate self-harm are more likely to report feelings of hopelessness, wide range of problems and inability to generate solutions to problems, than feelings of depression. They are more likely to report severe and significant problems in the areas of family, friends and school. The relation between lack of parental understanding and deliberate self-harm is nonsignificant. Inability to solve problems may be associated with the cognitive state of hopelessness.

Nervous and depressive symptoms in a longitudinal study of youth unemployment - selection or exposure?
Article Abstract:
A five-year study carried out in a part of northern Sweden where unemployment is high has found that long-term unemployment is linked to depression and nervous problems. Gender does not appear to be a key factor. Unemployment can affect mental health in a number of ways such as isolation, feeling a lack of control, blaming oneself and suffering from stress. Mental health problems can cause unemployment, but this is less important than the impact of unemployment on mental health.

Locus of control and problem-solving interaction in families with adolescents
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on family problem-solving interaction classification in families with adolescents. Qualitative analysis emphasized the way families act during problem situations, how they create solutions and their communication patterns. Results show that interaction may be classified using the family locus of control (F-LOC) concept. F-LOC may be further classified as either collaborative, individualistic, external or authoritarian.
