Working memory and children's mental addition

Article Abstract:

The extent to which children's mental arithmetic is compelled by working memory rather than by arithmetical competence was investigated, using a span procedure. It was concluded that the natural task of mental addition reflects working memory in a similar way, and the results are consistent with the concept of working memory as a general-purpose resource with mechanics indifferent to operational detail.
