Differences in perceived parental care and protection and related psychological distress between British Asian and non-Asian adolescents

Article Abstract:

The parental behavior as perceived by 331 British Asian and 493 British non-Asian adolescents between 14 and 15 years old was surveyed for care and protection using the Parental Bonding Instrument. Asian adolescents, especially girls felt stronger protection levels than non-Asians which was linked to higher psychological distress, though it may not be a direct cause and effect relationship. Non-Asians perceived a higher level of care than Asians, related to lower distress. These perceptions may be caused by adolescent adaptation to Britain while parents maintain South Asian values and so should be tested among second generation British Asians.

The self-concept of societally vulnerable and delinquent boys within the context of school and leisure activities

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the difference between the self-concepts of delinquent and non-delinquent adolescent boys. The findings indicate that most delinquent boys possess a leisure/non-conventional orientated self-concept while most non-delinquent boys exhibit a school/conventional orientated self-concept, similar to that exhibited by boys who are not involved in the peer group.

The amusement arcade as a social space for adolescents: an empirical study

Article Abstract:

A 1990 questionnaire survey of 460 11-to-16-year-old children in the UK revealed their main leisure-time activity to be visiting arcades, wherein they have free access to potentially addictive and socially unacceptable activities. Most of the sample, however, were keen on meeting and making friends in such arcades.
