English language use as a risk factor for smoking initiation among Hispanic and Asian American adolescents: evidence for mediation by tobacco-related beliefs and social norms

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between levels of acculturation, as demonstrated by English language use, and cigarette smoking in foreign-born Asian and Hispanic adolescents in California. Results indicate that adolescents who used English more frequently had an increased risk for smoking initiation and greater exposure to American smoking-related norms.

A family member's job loss as a risk factor for smoking among adolescents

Article Abstract:

The loss of job for a member of the family increases the risk factor, which causes involvement in problem behaviors like smoking among the adolescents. This unemployment may lead to grave financial, emotional and physical problems in the family, which may lead to the indication of physical illness and suicidal motive among the adults.

Smoking and moods in adolescents with depressive and aggressive dispositions: evidence from surveys and electronic diaries

Article Abstract:

This article examines the psychological factors that contribute to smoking risk in adolescents. An analysis of electronic diaries and surveys indicates that smoking risk, alcohol intake, and feelings of anger and sadness are elevated in adolescents with depressive and aggressive personalities.
