Facets of acculturation and their diverse relations to body shape concern in Fiji

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the relationship between several facets of acculturation to body shape concern among Fijian girls and women by probing both adherence to tradition and exposure to acculturated attitudes relating to eating and body shape ideals. Sensitivity and conformity to tradition were more strongly related to body shape concern among school cohort respondents than among community cohort respondents in the fully adjusted model as school cohort respondents encounter stronger peer pressure to relinquish food and feasting-related traditions than do village residents.

Truly late onset of eating disorders: a study of 11 cases averaging 60 years of age at presentation

Article Abstract:

An analysis of 11 cases of eating disorder patients, averaging 60 years at age of presentation, provides evidence for postmenopausal and truly late onset of anorexia or bulimia nervosa in elderly women. The concurrent medical and comorbid psychiatric symptoms complicate the diagnosis and treatment processes. Factors, such as reluctance to discuss psychological issues, and eating habits make the diagnosis more complex. The diagnosis and treatment criteria are similar to those for earlier onset cases. However, factors, such as loss of spouse or marital issues, need to be considered.

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted in a community sample of fifty ethnic Fijian women to investigate the prevalence and correlates of binge eating. The result reveals that the binge eating is associated with the body mass index (BMI) value above 35, a history of dieting, and a high concern with body shape.
