Familiar face and voice matching and recognition in children with autism

Article Abstract:

One group of 19 autistic children and a second group of 20 control children with moderate learning disability and specific language impairments from two schools for children with developmental disorders participated in a study which compared their ability to recognize familiar faces or match familiar voices to faces. The children were shown photographs of school staff and were asked to name the people in the photos and to match the photos to recorded voices. Results showed that autistic children are significantly impaired in matching familiar voices to faces in contrast to children with low language ability.

Can young people with autism refer to knowledge states? Evidence from their Understanding of "know" and "guess."

Article Abstract:

The ability of children with autism to refer to knowledge states was compared to that of mainstream school children and children with Down's syndrome. Results suggested that autistic individuals are able to contribute knowledge to themselves and to others but need high levels of verbal skills than is necessary in normal individuals. The level of language skill was able to predict the performance of autistic children, but not that of the children in the other groups.
