Family process and adaptation to children with mental retardation: disruption and resilience in family problem-solving interactions

Article Abstract:

Children with mild or moderate mental retardation can have a negative impact on family problem-solving interactions. However, there is also evidence that families with a mentally retarded child generally cope well with the special problems they face. There are particular problems for single mothers of children with mental retardation. These women show fewer problem-solving behaviours than their counterparts in two-parent families. They tend to be more directive, possibly reflecting their efforts to retain control over their family with no spousal support.
