Femininity, masculinity, and disordered eating: a meta-analytic review

Article Abstract:

An analysis of articles about the relationships between eating problems and gender shows that there is a small, heterogeneous positive link between eating problems and femininity and a corresponding negative relationship between eating problems and masculinity. The study, which analyses research that used Bem Sex Role Inventory and Personal Attributes Questionnaire to define gender roles, suggests that eating problems could be related to perceived gender roles.

Ambivalent attachment in female adolescents: association with affective instability and eating disorders

Article Abstract:

A survey of 28 college students was undertaken to find out whether a particular attachment behavior to mothers was related to eating disorders. The attachment behaviors have been categorized as either secure, ambivalent and avoidant. Results show that those who have experienced ambivalent feelings were likely to suffer from anorexia initially and bulimia eventually. However, the smallness of the sample does not make the derived conclusions definitive.
