Flexibility in spatial attention before and after practice

Article Abstract:

The simultaneous presence of images falling on the retina can complicate identification and response. Visual selection can be based on location, and some studies have indicated that letter search requires some sort of attention. Experiments were undertaken, using spatial probes, to measure how spatial attention is allotted throughout the visual field during letter search. Attentional strength was found to be flexibly adjusted depending on confusability between target and distractors.

Spatial attention in visual search for features and feature conjunctions

Article Abstract:

A measure of spatial attention in visual search tasks using a probe technique revealed feature-driven selection, wherein attention is allocated to locations with either of the target features. Contrary to previous predictions, spatial attention was applied when the target has a clearly distinguishable feature. Target locations had the greatest effects of attention, followed by distractor locations with the target color and by distractor locations with the target shape.

Effects of perceived space on spatial attention

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the effects of perceived space on spatial attention using a cuing method aimed at analyzing space- versus object-based attention. The objective was to show that a perceptual illusion that changes the perceived length of two lines also influences spatial attention. Results indicate that spatial attention is distributed in space as it is perceived and transformed by perceptual organization.
