How complex is the nicotinic receptor system of insects?
Article Abstract:
The insect nervous system is characterized by an abundance of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), which means that neurons utilize acetylcholine as pricipal neurotransmitter. While numerous studies have attempted to determine the level of complexity of the insect's nicotinic cholinergic receptor system, the issue remains unresolved. With the emergence of developments in the science of nAChR cloning, evidence has been gathered supporting speculations that insects posssess receptor heterogeneity and that their nicotinic cholinergic receptors are made up of a diverse group of proteins.

Gene therapy: a hard graft for neuroscientists?
Article Abstract:
A meeting attended by several neurogeneticists and molecular biologists was held in Stockholm, Sweden on Jun 2-5, 1993. Entitled "Gene Transfer Strategies in the Study of Brain Damage and Repair," the discussions centered on the various techniques now being used in the field of gene therapy. Gene therapy holds a potential value in the treatment of various neurological diseases. But before clinical trials are started, the safety and efficacy of such techniques must first be proven.

Using spontaneous and inducted mutations to dissect brain and behavior genetically
Article Abstract:
The relatively new field of behavioral neurogenetics, which is a combination of behavioral neuroscience and behavioral genetics, received support in a meeting called First Brain Research Interactive Conference held on Nov 4-6, 1998. Topics discussed during the conference include mutagenesis screening methodologies, targeted mutations and the analysis of natural variation. It is notable that most current studies elucidate on phenogenetic issues.
