Impact of recent economic changes in psychiatry on academic psychiatry programs

Article Abstract:

The field of psychiatry in the US is currently barraged with changes in health care reform and cost conservation schemes. Managed care and mental health benefit packages are now more oriented toward a desire to manage costs than a desire to manage care. Academic psychiatry must learn to position itself as a vital force in general health care. Efforts must be geared toward the establishment of valid outcome measures, treatment guidelines and cost-effectiveness research. The public must be made aware of the importance of psychiatry in human and economic terms.

A changing psychiatry for the future

Article Abstract:

The practice of psychiatry is radically evolving as a result of the changes being fueled by managed care. However, psychiatrists should take care not to lose track of three important issues concerning their profession. These are: insuring that the practice of psychiatry works for the maximum benefit of patients, finding ways to organize the study and treatment of illnesses in order to better understand and treat them, and making sure that the redefinition of psychiatry makes it better equipped to serve society.

What is psychiatry?

Article Abstract:

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the study and treatment of mental disorders. It can also be considered as a medical discipline concerned with diseases of the brain since the mind is an expression of brain activity. Psychiatry deals with diseases with unknown etiology as well as those with known neuropathology. Several medical specialists, however, maintain the outdated definition that psychiatry is limited to syndromes of unknown cause.
