Individuating age salience: a psychological perspective on the salience of age in the life course

Article Abstract:

A study has shown that chronological age represents a salient dimension in terms of life course and transitions. It is argued that the perception of consequences of missing a deadline may suggest motivational or coping processes related to approaching or crossing the deadline rather than actual consequences. Moreover, it is posited that age-related expectations and deadlines are strong determinants of how people perceive and evaluate themselves and others and that age-related expectations are involved in the selection and pursuit of goals across the life span.

Article Abstract:

The qualitative, interpretive and textual approaches in developmental theory and research were evaluated in light of the rapidly changing demographics in the US and worldwide with respect to race, ethnicity and social class. It was noted that any ideological critique must be able to prescribe changes in the practice of developmental psychology. Developmental theory believes that changes in children's development must not be treated apart from the social, political and material situations that have given rise to these changes.

Article Abstract:

Wolfgang Edelstein and Inge Bretherton constricted themselves to comparing the views of Gil Noam and Dante Cicchetti in developmental psychology with the popular ideas of Bowlby and Piaget. Noam and Cicchetti recognize the significance of interaction to development, in contrast to Bretherton's claim that they are noninteractionist and intrapsychic. They argue that Edelstein is wrong in his view that the causal-longitudinal strategy of risk variables is more applicable than the use of biography and narrative method.
