Is the glass half empty or half full? A response to Pollard (1995)
Article Abstract:
Paul Pollard's conclusion, that Ronet Bachman's study of rape reporting showed stranger rape was not more likely to be reported than acquaintance rape, is in error. Analysis of rate reporting data from the National Crime Victimization Survey done by the Bureau of Justice Statistics show that acquaintance rape reports have increased faster than stranger rape reports, decreasing the reporting differences. The data does not answer the important question, however, which is whether women are as reluctant to report rape as they have been in the past.

Response to Levinson (1995)
Article Abstract:
Robert B. Levinson, in criticizing Jon L. Proctor's research regarding the predicting of adjustment problems for prisoners to prison life, failed to see the interrelation and dependence Proctor was attempting to show between the concepts of security and custody. They are distinct, but custody levels for prisoners indicate the security levels assigned, such as a maximum custody level resulting in a prisoner being assigned to a maximum security facility. Control can only be achieved if prison staffing is appropriate to maintain custody.

Note on Proctor (1994)
Article Abstract:
There is a distinction between custody and security when classifying prisoners entering prisons which Jon L. Proctor does not keep separate in his research. Classification procedures should establish a prisoner's security level, which involves predicting the prisoner's future behavior, and this in turn will determine their custody level, which involves how much control will be necessary. Control is the goal of security, not the prediction of the prisoner's adjustment to prison life as Proctor claims.
