Integrating stage continuum models to explain processing of exercise messages and exercise initiation among sedentary college students

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that sedentary students with positive attitudes towards exercise experienced discrepancies between their ideals and inactivity whereas students with neutral attitudes towards exercise did not. Studies were based on 147 undergraduate and graduate students from three colleges who did not exercise three or more times a week.

Is the sequencing of change processes by stage consistent across health problems? A meta-analysis

Article Abstract:

This article examines the cognitive-affective and behavioral processes involved in behavior modification and health promotion. Results indicate that the stages of lifestyle change processes, such as smoking cessation and diet adherence, differ in sequence across health goals and vary in their reliance on cognitive and behavioral strategies.

The effect of life events and exercise program format on the adoption and maintenance of exercise behavior

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between life change events and adherence to a home-based or class-based exercise program. Results indicate that participants who reported three or four life events within a six month period had significantly lower rates of program adherence regardless of exercise format.
