Just say no: how are visual searches terminated when there is no target present?
Article Abstract:
The Guided Search model solves the problem of how to terminate a visual search task when no target is found. The model calculates the probability of each item being a target on the basis of the items' differences from one another and their similarity to the target. This probability, expressed as an activation, is examined in decreasing order until the target is found or an activation threshold is reached. The threshold, set by the observer, is restricted after misses and becomes more liberal after successful trials. Increased trial duration is associated with increased probability of guessing.

Spreading of visual attention to modally versus amodally completed regions
Article Abstract:
Amodal and modal completion affects attentive vision in different ways, even though amodal and modal completion could be identical or similar processes in preattentive stages of vision. Experiments show that attention does not spread between amodally completed regions but does spread between comparable modally completed ones. The missing areas of modal surfaces could be filled in by the visual system at preattentive stages in order that later attentional stages can be driven like a real surface by these parts.
