Late luteal phase dysphoric disorder in young women
Article Abstract:
A number of difficulties are present in the existing studies of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), also know as late luteal phase dysphoric disorder. These include the lack of an accepted definition, the problem of distinguishing the symptoms of the syndrome from other conditions, and the fact that much research is based on retrospective diagnoses. To determine the prevalence of this disorder among young women, 217 college students between of the ages of 17 to 29 were prospectively assessed; the subjects did not have any currently identifiable chronic health problems. The women, who were not informed of the nature of the study to prevent bias, were asked to rate 33 emotional and physical symptoms over a 90-day period. PMS was diagnosed on the basis of criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, third edition, revised. The results of the 217 subjects were compared with those of a group of 25 young women who had sought treatment for symptoms and who had already been diagnosed with PMS. A total of 10 out of the 217 women, less than 5 percent of the group, were diagnosed with PMS, making this condition fairly uncommon. An additional nine women had mild premenstrual symptoms, but did not meet the criteria for the disorder. Although the 10 women in the college group met the same criteria as the 25 who were previously diagnosed, they reported much less fatigue and better concentration; incidence of depression and overall symptoms in this group were also less pronounced. Possible explanations to account for the differences in the two groups of women with PMS are discussed. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Treatment of dysphoric mania with nefazodone
Article Abstract:
A 38-year-old woman diagnosed with dysphoric mania was successfully treated with the novel antidepressant nefazodone. Prior to the nefazodone treatment, the patient had undergone trials of multiple medications as well as a course of electroconvulsive therapy to no avail. With the addition of 200 mg/day nefazodone to the lithium and valproic acid therapy, the patient experienced marked improvement in her mood, decreased irritability and impulsivity, improved sleep and decreased anxiety within two weeks.

Traumatic grief: a case of loss-induced trauma
Article Abstract:
The depressive feelings of a 59-yr-old widow are examined to determine symptoms of traumatic grief due to bereavement. The widow underwent a period of depression after her husband's death and after some of her prized possessions were stolen. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R-Non-Patient Edition as a diagnostic tool, it was found that the widow's worries regarding companionship and finances were caused by several important life experiences.
