Mathematical problem solving and working memory in children with learning disabilities: both executive and phonological processes are important

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between mathematical problem solving and memory capabilities in a sample of learning disabled children. Findings indicate that the relationship between short-term memory and mathematical solution accuracy in learning disabled children is mediated by the activation of relevant problem-solving information in long-term memory.

The influence of working memory and classification ability on children's word problem solution

Article Abstract:

A study, conducted by researchers of the Universities of California and Northern Colorado in the US and British Columbia in Canada, investigated the link between problem classification and working memory span on children's solution accuracy of arithmetic word problems. Regression analysis results showed no relation between working memory resources and schemata activation, and a slight connection between memory and problem showing accuracy.
