Nano-optics in the biological world: beetles, butterflies, birds and moths
Article Abstract:
Mechanisms responsible for producing colors on butterfly wings, bird feathers, Hercules beetle, moths and biological analogues of cholesteric liquid crystals have been examined. Hercules beetles rely on color to camouflage themselves from predators while moths produce color by interference and diffraction. Scarab beetles generate a brilliant, metallic color that is highly polarized. Color in animals is produced in the absence of chromophores through structural variations resulting in interference, diffraction or scattering.
