Pathophysiology of alcoholism
Article Abstract:
The article by Tsai et al. sheds new light on the potential interaction between psychedelic drugs and alcohol. The authors support the concept of alcoholism as a glutamate-related neuropsychiatric disorder and suggest the involvement of the phencyclidine binding site within the N-methyl-D-aspartate ionophore receptor channel complex. According to their model, phencyclidine may also inhibit some of the pharmacologic effects of alcohol consumption.

Psychologists can upgrade their alcoholic's treatment procedures by deeply studying the family history and social interaction of afflicted persons. Empirical studies are indicative of the negative impacts of alcoholism on family life, as reflected in the poorer social behavior, health and family structure of alcohol afflicted families in comparison to healthy or even troubled families.
