Practitioner review: the assessment and treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in children and adolescents

Article Abstract:

Many concerns have been expressed about the validity of the criteria for diagnosing Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, there is growing evidence that PTSD is actually an abnormal response to an abnormal incident involving a complex mingling of psychological, biological and social factors. Regardless of the limitations of the diagnostic criteria, they are relevant to the experiences of many people experiencing trauma, including children. It is possible to reliably assess the PTSD symptomatology through semistructured interview and self-report techniques, but self-report should not be used exclusively.
