Preschoolers' and adults' reliance on object shape and object function for lexical extension

Article Abstract:

The developmental progression of reliance on object function versus object shape to extend novel words was investigated. Participants were provided with explicit information about and direct experience with the functions of target and test objects. Three and five year olds focused on shape in all experiments, while adults focused on function, indicating a developmental change in the consideration of shape and function in lexical extension.
