Psychiatric symptoms in clients presenting for commercial weight reduction treatment
Article Abstract:
Individuals seeking treatment in a commercial weight reduction program (CWRP) have a higher prevalence of depressive symptomatology and psychosocial disability as compared to those seeking outpatient medical treatment. There is a correlation between degree of obesity and severity of depressive symptoms. CWRP clients, especially women, express higher dissatisfaction with the body irrespective of the actual body weight. Both groups show similar levels if anxiety. Family, social and occupational functioning in CWRP clients is more impaired than that in medical patients.
