Psychoanalytic reflections on language distortion and empathic listening

Article Abstract:

Jacques Lacan's emphasis on the listening process of the psychoanalyst is illustrated by a case study derived from the supervision of an intern's treatment of a paranoid schizophrenic woman. The therapist noted a sexual element in the patient's pronunciation of a Hebrew phrase, which ostensibly means 'You're identifying with me?' The inflection, which changes the meaning to a sexual one, suggests the patient's confusion of feelings of closeness and identification with sexual feelings. The analyst must be able to tolerate semantic ambiguity in order to develop empathic listening ability.

The emancipation of time from autistic encapsulation: a study in the use of countertransference

Article Abstract:

Exploration of the impact of autistic pockets of null interiority, or ateriority, on the experience of time will help explain temporal aspects of states resembling autism in nonpsychotic personalities. Paradoxical qualities of autistic-like psychological states have been challenging to contemporary psychoanalysts. The autistic state circumscribes a level of dependence upon repetition and exactness. A case study involving countertransference is discussed.
