Psychological meaning of separation anxiety in mothers and fathers

Article Abstract:

A study of 133 women and 114 men compares the separation anxiety of mothers and fathers from their first born infants. while the mean level of separation anxiety was similar there were gender differences in the patterns of anxiety. Self-criticism and wife's separation anxiety were the only relevant factors for men. Women seemed more affected by their conditioning in their role as mothers and personality attributes such as dependency were also factors. The health characteristics of the child also impacted the degree of the mother's anxiety.

Single parenthood and school readiness in white, black, and hispanic 6- and 7-year-olds

Article Abstract:

The circumstances under which single parenthood may or may not have an adverse influence on school readiness and achievement in white, black and hispanic 6-7 year old children, are examined. Single and two parent families differed in income, but had similar maternal abilities and education levels, indicating that single parenthood need not be a risk factor for early child outcomes in the presence of positive maternal or family characteristics supportive of children's development.
