Precursors of literacy delay among children at genetic risk of dyslexia

Article Abstract:

The literacy skills of 63 children at genetic risk of dyslexia were compared with 34 children with no history of reading impairment. 57% of the at risk group showed delayed literacy development at six years compared to just 12% of controls. Early speech and language skills predicted individual differences in literacy outcome, with genetic risk representing a unique variance beyond this.

Psychosocial outcomes at 15 years of children with a preschool history of speech-language impairment

Article Abstract:

The study replicate and extends previous findings by assessing the psychosocial outcomes of adolescents with a pre-school history of speech-language impairment, whose language and scholastic skills were documented over a 11-year period. Amongst children with speech-language delays at 5.5 years, those with more severe and persistent language difficulties and low nonverbal IQ are at higher risk of psychiatric morbidity in adolescence.
