The relative contribution of consonants and vowels to word identification during reading

Article Abstract:

Issues related to the recognition of consonants and vowels in the act of reading, and the importance for word recognition, are examined. Topics include the conclusion that consonants play a more imporant part than vowels in the initial phases of word identification.

The effects of thematic fit and discourse context on syntactic ambiguity resolution

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the manner in which lexical and syntactical ambiguities are processed when comprehending sentences are examined. Topics include the role of noun-verb combinations, discourse bias, and thematic fit in such phrases as "the defendant examined" when it is initially unclear whether "examined" is a verb or a modifier.

Punctuation and intonation effects on clause and sentence wrap-up: Evidence from eye movements

Article Abstract:

Three eye movement studies examined the role of punctuation in reading. The intonation hypothesis is supported for vocatives and parentheticals but not for non-restrictive relative clauses.
