Repeating words in spontaneous speech
Article Abstract:
The repetition of words in spontaneous speech, often viewed as an error in communication, is a problem-solving strategy that involves complex cognitive processes. A study on the origin of repetitive words was conducted. The four stages of mental processes which include initial commitment to a noun phrase, suspension of speech, hiatus and the restart of a constituent were described. The commit-and-restore model was identified as the framework that explains these cognitive processes. Moreover, the findings confirm that repeated words serve important functions in effective communication.

Bootstrapping word boundaries: a bottom-up corpus-based approach to speech segmentation
Article Abstract:
Neural network models can be used to study speech segmentation. Segmentation cues are given by the way phonetic segments are distributed in conversational English. Infants are able to develop sophisticated ability in segmentation from an initial sensitivity to subsegmental primitives. They can thus develop adult abilities. The Metrical Segmentation Strategy is a helpful way of understanding this issue and helps explain how infants develop linguistic abilities.
