Savants, segments, art and autism

Article Abstract:

Two experiments which investigated the pattern construction by artistically gifted, autistic savants revealed that individuals with autism are able to construct a pattern from segmented components, but this factor is certainly intelligence-dependent. The weak central coherence in autism is seen to account for the relatively high frequency of savants among the autistic population. One explanation of what an artist does is to construct pictures by isolating and emphasizing component parts and autistic savants tend to do well on tests measuring this ability.

Drawing impossible entities: a measure of the imagination in children with autism, children with learning disabilities, and normal 4-year-olds

Article Abstract:

The ability of autistic children to imagine impossible entities when the task demands are minimal was examined. Sixteen normal, 16 moderately learning disabled and 16 autistic children aged four, but with verbal mental ages ranging from four to six, were asked to distinguish between real and impossible pictures and to complete drawings of real and impossible entities. The children were found to be equally successful in these tasks.
