Self-enhancing effects of exposure to thin-body images

Article Abstract:

The effect of thin-body media images on mood, self-esteem, and self-image ratings of restrained and unrestrained eaters is examined. The results state that restrained eaters reported more favorable self image and social esteem scores after exposure to thin-body images than after exposure to control advertisements whereas the scores of unrestrained eaters were unaffected by advertisement type, but their appearance self esteem scores were lower after exposure to thin body advertisement.

The sociocultural attitudes towards appearance scale-3 (SATAQ-3): development and validation

Article Abstract:

A revision of a widely used measure of societal influences on body image and eating disturbances-the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ) is developed and validated. The results state two distinct internalization factors: one appeared to reflect a generic media influence related to TV, magazines and movies, and the second factor reflected internalization of athletic and sports figure.

Anthropomorphic characteristics of centerfold models: Trends towards slender figures over time

Article Abstract:

Anthropomorphic characteristics of centerfold models were analyzed to determine if there is a trend towards slimmer models over the period of 50 years. The findings suggest that though there is a trend towards slimness, but the changes were gradual.
