Sex, drugs and alcohol: two peer-led approaches in Tamaki Makauru/Auckland, Aotearora/New Zealand
Article Abstract:
Adolescence is a time of risk-taking and experimentation, and decisions made during adolescence can have effects on later life. The level of motor vehicle accidents related to the consumption of alcohol and other drugs is too high in New Zealand, as are teenage pregancy rates, and teenagers are also at risk from HIV infection. Two peer-led interventions have been examined in the context of New Zealand's unique cultural enviornment, with a large Maori and Pacific Island population.

Common reasons why peer education fails
Article Abstract:
Peer education has come to be seen as a useful way of promoting health in the United kingdom during the 1990s, and this is especially true for work om sexual health amd substance misuse. A model of good practice has yet to be established, and there is no clear agreement on what peer education is. Clear planning is one way to ensure that peer education projects are successful. Peer education has to form part of a wider approach geared to the needs of young people.

Defining peer education
Article Abstract:
Peer education has become popular since the 1960s, but there is a lack of clarity as to what it entails. An operational framework is needed to define and interpret interventions involving peer education. There is a need to focus on the methods and aims of peer intervention and the form of the involvement of peer educators. 'Peer delivery' can be separated from the idea of 'peer development', and a 'fit' can be found between client group, approach and location.
