Special issue on adolescent health

Article Abstract:

The psychological, physical and social changes during adolescence can have profound impact on adolescent health and risk-taking behaviors. Research on adolescent health focuses on describing the adolescent health status, explaining the etiology of illnesses, and predicting and controlling the health-threatening behaviors. An enhanced understanding of health-relevant behaviors of adolescents can help in designing effective intervention programs. Several guidelines for evaluation research, which focus on testing the effectiveness of interventions, are presented.

Symptoms of affective disorder in pre-adolescent vs. adolescent inpatients

Article Abstract:

Comparison of depressed inpatient pre-adolescents and adolescents on the basis of demographic and symptom variables reveals that melancholia, global improvement rating and suicidal attempts are most predictive of adolescents. The pre-adolescents exhibit high rates of temper outbursts, distractibility and irritability. The pre-adolescents also do not respond to inpatient interventions as much as the depressed inpatient adolescents. Results also suggest that pre-adolescents with major depression are more prone to developing bipolarity.

Adolescent homicide: towards assessment of risk

Article Abstract:

Mental health professionals need to be able to detect and manage homicidal tendencies in children and adolescents. Background factors such as witnessing serious violence, learning difficulties, inadequate and abusive family situations, and problems with impulse control may influence such tendencies. These factors may create a morbid identity and a cognitive set disposed towards homicidal behavior. Mental health services must become more accessible and less stigmatizing for youth while personnel should be better trained in this area.
