Stone-tool usage by Thai long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis)

Article Abstract:

The surveys of long tailed macaques at Piak Nam Yai Island, Laem Son National Park, Ranong Province, situated in Southern Thailand have observed that they use axe-shaped stones to crack rock oysters, detached gastropods, bivalves, and swimming crabs. The tool usage by Thai long-tailed macaques that crack rock oysters with stones could be characterized as level 1, and that cracking drifting mollusks and crabs with stones by placing them on rock could be characterized as level 2.

Mitochondrial DNA variation within and among regional populations of longtail macaques (Macaca fascicularis) in relation to other species of the fascicularis group of macaques

Article Abstract:

The genetic variation is characterized within and among 1053 samples comprising of five regional populations each of longtail macaques and rhesus macaques, and one sample each of Japanese and Taiwanese macaques by sequencing an 835 base pair fragment of mitochondrial DNA. It is argued that the level of genetic differentiation between Indian and Chinese rhesus macaques justifies their use as animal models for the study of different human diseases.
