Suicidal behavior as related to social support and assertiveness among Swedish and Turkish high school students: a cross-cultural investigation

Article Abstract:

The suicidal behavior in adolescents is equally frequent in Sweden and in Turkey, two culturally very different countries. A study conducted to determine the relationship between attempts at suicide and suicide risk and assertiveness indicate that family environment and emotional disturbances are responsible for the suicidal behavior and also reflect a serious mental problem. The Suicide Probability Scale is used in determining the suicidal behavior among adolescents from different cultures.

Attributions of shy persons in romantic relationships

Article Abstract:

A study of the attitudes of shy persons in romantic associations in 215 psychology college students using the Beck Depression Inventory, the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale and the Romantic Relations Attributions Questionnaire shows that shy persons attribute failure in romantic relations in ways characteristic of depressed people. Shy males may be inclined to abandon a problematic relationship while shy females may be more committed to making relationship work.

Compulsive eating, obsessive thoughts of food, and their relations to assertiveness and depression in women

Article Abstract:

A study of the association between depression in women and compulsive eating thoughts of food using volunteers from a college population and from weight reduction programs shows that disinhibition and obsessive thinking were the best determinants of compulsive eating. Despite only 31% of the subjects being overweight medically, 49% actually rated themselves to be average to very overweight.
