Target influences on the development of leech neurons

Article Abstract:

The reproductive ducts found in segments five and six of the leech Hirudo medicinalis exert a neurotropic effect on its Retzius neurons. This condition results into the development of morphological and physiological changes distinct from other Retzius neurons. It also exerts chemoaffinity and end organ specification resulting to changes in morphology, synaptic input and response to acetylcholine. When ablated and transferred to other segments, there was an abundant outgrowth of Retzius cells but no organ-specific changes. Organ specificity then, occurs early in the development of Retzius cells.

How are neurons specified: master or positional control?

Article Abstract:

The complexity of the nervous system is seen in the diversity of neurons which are cells that either adhere to a positional information or are independent of any positional value and are otherwise called protoneurons. These two types of neurons are not considered mutually exclusive and, thus, they can cooperate at any stage. In fact, they have been observed to form a complicated and close link as seen in gain of function experiments.
