The American dream revisited: is it what you want or why you want it that matters?
Article Abstract:
Self-determining and controlling reasons for four classes of aspirations were investigated in a group of 246 students to evaluate the findings of a previous study which suggest that aspirations to material success had an inverse relation to self-actualization while aspirations to community involvement had a positively correlation. Results reveal that it is not the goal but rather the reasons behind the goal that determine self-actualization. Self-determining reasons lead to self-actualization while controlling reasons do not.

Will lawyering strangle democratic capitalism?: a retrospective
Article Abstract:
American lawyers resist facing the obvious reason for their growing unpopularity. Americans react negatively to the large increase in the number of lawyers and the growth of the legal process this means. Litigation reform is increasingly before state and federal legislatures, meaning that these developments also have political consequences. Judges must also understand the reasons for the unpopularity of the legal profession and resist judicial activism, leaving policymaking to other branches of government.

'An avenue to some degree of profit and reputation': The Sketch Book as Washington Irving's entree and undoing
Article Abstract:
The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent, opened to Washington Irving a world of stately homes and their real-life avenues. The book's deferential, pastoralized and nostalgic view of Britain was tailored to Irving's perceptions of the tastes of his two markets. He pursued an escapist vision of Britain to promote The Sketch Book, which gained as much as it lost from Irving's compromises, resulting in an unusual blend of European and American materials.
