The Effects of Unemployment on the Mood, Self-Esteem, Locus of Control, and Depressive Affect of School-Leavers
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the psychological effects of unemployment in school-leavers. Questionnaires were given to respondents when they were still at school. They were also administered again one year later in order to make comparisons between the groups of unemployed and employed young people. The main conclusion of this study is that unemployment has significant psychological consequences for the young person. The young unemployed appear to be less well-adjusted than their employed counterparts. They reported greater negative mood in terms of boredom, unhappiness, and helplessness. The unemployed also scored lower on self-esteem and higher on the depressive effect. This study provided evidence that these psychological effects were attributable to the unemployment effect.
