The ON and OFF channels of the visual system
Article Abstract:
A study of bipolar cells show that there are two major types of cone bipolar cells namely the OFF bipolar cells that hyperpolarize in response to light and the ON bipolar cells that depolarize in response to light. The two channels were found to be segregated in the geniculostriate system until they reach the cortex where they converge on single cells. The ON and OFF channels serve to optimize information transfer to the CNS by giving excitatory signals for both increases and decreases in light energy.

An essential 'set' of K+ channels conserved in flies, mice and humans
Article Abstract:
Sodium and potassium ion channels are encoded by multigene families. Genetic research reveals that there is 40% to 70% identity of Shal, Shab, Shaw and Shaker potassium channel subfamilies from Drosophila flies to their mammalian homologues. These channels have similar structures but are independent channel systems which blend according to the different cell types. Thus, membrane electrical properties and molecular details were preserved from invertebrate and vertebrate ancestry.

Curing amyloidosis: will it work in humans?
Article Abstract:
Research with transgenic mice presents the possibility of immunization against amyloidosis. Injections of synthetic, fibrillar beta-amyloid in complete adjuvant, in incomplete adjuvant and without adjuvent appear to prevent formation of amyloid deposits and to clear existing amyloid deposits to some extent in the transgenic mice.
