The difficulty of measuring musical quality (and quantity): commentary on Weisberg
Article Abstract:
Robert W. Weisberg asserts that the lack of difference in the average number of recordings by Robert Schumann during the hypomanic and depressive years shows that his mood only affected the quantity and not the quality. However, Weisberg regards the number of recordings listed in record guides as a measure of quality, while they only reflect popularity. The decrease in the number of recordings during the later part of Schumann's life is probably due to a change in his style, form, and instrumentation. The idea of increased creativity supported by Weisberg only reflects a person's productivity.
