The first confluence of mediterranean neuroscience
Article Abstract:
Highlights of the 1997 Mediterranean Neuroscience Conference and the Mediterranean Epilepsy Conference are discussed. A course on the development of the cortex and the differentiation of its components was presented by Colin Blakemore. On the other hand, the roles played by inhibitory cells in the hippocampal network was discussed by Richard Miles. Other topics presented in the conferences were about the rhythmical oscillations in the spinal cord and the brain and the organization of the hippocampal interneuronal network.

Matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors in the nervous system: the good, the bad and the enigmatic
Article Abstract:
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors, known as the tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs), were the topics of a recent international conference held in Banff, Canada. Gillian Murphy from Norwich, UK, told delegates that the activation of MMPs is a complex process involving multiple factors that have yet to be studied. Compatriot Dylan Edwards spoke about the complex and concentration-dependent nature of how TIMPs interact with MMPs.
