The slender ideal and eating disorders: an interdisciplinary "telescope" model

Article Abstract:

An interdisciplinary model is proposed that links the etiology of anorexia nervosa, bulimia and other eating disorders to shifts in the ideal of female bodily attractiveness. It is called the 'telescope' model because its biological component is nested within its psychological component which, in turn, is nested within its sociological component which is also nested within the cross-cultural component. The model proposes that eating disorders are modern symptoms of psychological adjustments enabling women to tailor their economic strategy to local conditions.

Risk factors for eating disorders in Greek- and Anglo-Australian adolescent girls

Article Abstract:

A study conducted in Australia on an ethnically mixed group of 246 girls in Grade 8, to analyze their eating patterns and to determine the factors responsible for eating disorders, revealed that the pressure to eat, extreme weight loss behavior and family adaptability were important contributors. Eating patterns varied according to the culture. Greek-Australian girls showed more extreme weight loss behavior. Despite cultural differences, there were no major dissimilarities in the risk factors for eating disorders.
