The use of internal games: the case of addiction
Article Abstract:
A model is developed to study addictive behavior. The model incorporates the two conflicting variables of addiction, namely, 'Reason' and 'Appetite.' Reason can either suppress or resign to the Appetite while the Appetite can either remain abstinent or consume the drug. It is shown that the payoff matrix changes when addictions are strengthened by preceding consumption. The model also clarifies unresolved issues in Becker and Murphy's neoclassical model of addiction.
