Treatment of violent juvenile offenders - we have the knowledge: comment on Gorman-Smith et al. (1996)

Article Abstract:

Findings by D. Gorman-Smith, P.H. Tolan, A. Zelli, and L.R. Huesmann have brought about a consensus regarding the factors influencing juvenile delinquency. Occurrence of deviant behavior declines when these factors are addressed through a specific and ecological treatment model using scientific, individualized and flexible methods. These factors are ignored by the mental health and juvenile justice services. Development and validation of an ecological treatment model and addressing various needs of juvenile offenders and their families are necessary.

The implications of the multisystemic therapy (MST) efficacy-effectiveness effect size discrepancy for the transport of other evidence-based treatment to field settings are discussed. It is observed that evidence-based practices can be successfully transported, but much remains to be learned regarding the optimal parameters of such transport.
