"When you carry condoms all the boys think you want it": negotiating competing discourses about safe sex

Article Abstract:

A survey was conducted among Australian rural senior students to find out their concept of safe sex and to study the usefulness and hindrances to safe sex practice among adolescents in rural communities. The results show that rural teenagers believe that safe sex equals condom use, which is the focus of sex education in Australian schools. Aside from sexually transmitted diseases, productive sex leads to adolescence pregnancy which will lead to economic problems as well as community ridicule. Therefore, safe sex practices that fit within the context of adolescence should be promoted.
