125 great moments of Harper's Bazaar

Hearst Books/William Morrow's '125 Great Moments of Harper's Bazaar,' a portfolio of illustrations, photographs and text, commemorates the magazine's 125th anniversary. Piecing together and obtaining permission to use the materials included in the portfolio proved a difficult but interesting task. Several covers and photographs from the portfolio, including works by Jean Cocteau, Richard Avedon and Salvador Dali, are presented.

An editor's perspective on magazine design
Article Abstract:
Magazine designed Kurt Andersen and Graydon Carter launched a humor and satire magazine in the 80's called Spy. Its destinctive graphic style was debated by some, but it appears in print and electronic media in the 90's. Spy was sold in 1991 due to financial problems. Andersen return to Time as a columnist in 1993, then joined the New York in 1996. In 1999 he writes a column for the magazine 'The Culture Industry."

Mainstreaming Details; after years of explosive growth, circulation of Details magazine stalled

Details magazine has undergone a change with the appointment of new editor, Michael Caruso, in May 1997. Caruso wants to maintain the magazine's reputation as an authority on popular culture as well as to garner new readers through moving away from its 'downtown' sensibility. Circulation has remained 400,000 since Jan 1996. There is now greater coverage of business and sports.
