Article Abstract:
Two electronic publishing problems are briefly addressed. An anecdote on the production of a one-off CD-ROM notes how the company preparing the disk wiped out 61Kbytes of the data on the source hard disk. The data took another two weeks to be reconstituted, resulting in the moral that extra time should be always allocated for the unexpected in alternative media products just like in conventional print projects. There has been so far no very satisfactory desktop color management system for ensuring color matching between the various components of a desktop publishing environment. Apple, though, has developed a Macintosh operating system enhancement that eases matching of color among computer display, scanner, printer and four-color press. ColorSync automatically updates the color for the color profiles of any device in the desktop publishing system. The software will be included in the operating system when QuickDraw GX debuts. Other color system vendors such as Kodak and Electronics For Imaging are planning to update their products to support ColorSync.

Article Abstract:
Several problems in desktop publishing and other software packages are briefly noted. None of the three PostScript printer drivers Microsoft has shipped for Windows 3.1 since introducing the graphical user interface upgrade has totally succeeded in fixing page size definitions. The addition of setup information to PostScript document descriptions in the QuarXPress 3.1 desktop publishing software makes it more difficult to isolate individual pages when fixing printing problems. A bug in the Aldus FreeHand 3.1 graphics software package causes the software to print 8-bit color, when 24-bit color is expected. Aldus changed the PostScript dictionary and replaced the Aldus Printer Description files with PostScript Printer Description files in new version 4.1 of the PageMaker desktop publishing software package, resulting in several problems that may be resolved in forthcoming version 4.2a.

Article Abstract:
Getting a computer, the operating system and the applications to recognize and use memory upgrades can be difficult. Memory managers offer one solution; they work once the 32-bit data addressing option in System 7's Memory Control Panel is turned on. Some Apple Quadra owners claim that simply powering down, installing a stack of RAM chips and powering up again is insufficient. In this case, delete parameter RAM, which forces the Macintosh to remap whatever memory it finds. To do this, hold down Option-Command and the r and p keys at once as the machine is turned on. Preparation guidelines for installing a beta version of the Microsoft Windows NT operating system, and suggestions regarding Nextstation Color slots are given.
