Constructing identities in Trinidad
Article Abstract:
Kevin Birth correctly observed the 'cultural construction' of identity categories in his book 'Most of Us are Family Some of the Time: Interracial Unions and Transracial Kinship in Eastern Trinidad.' However, he was mistaken in stating that identity categories predict behavior and attitude and that the strategic utilization of categories is based on consensus. Birth also made generous use of the terms 'culturally constructed' and socially negotiated' in his book, which are not in any way synonymous as the latter refers to a consciousness and direction that becomes apparent only during the later concept of cultural construction.

Bringing guitars to life
Article Abstract:
A book designer describes the process that she and her partner followed to design 'Ferrington Guitars,' a coffee-table book of appreciation for the work of guitar-maker Danny Ferrington. The book is accompanied by a compact disc, with music using the guitars pictured. Ferrington participated in the making of the book and the CD by educating the designers about his guitars and the music that could be played on them. He also provided much of the text via interviews with Todd Lapin. Some pictures from the book are shown.
