Conodesk 6000 (controller board): Conographic Corp

Article Abstract:

The Conodesk 6000 controller board, from Conographic Corp, priced at $2,695, combines impressive speed with a reasonable price. The 6000 will work with the Canon LBP-8II printer, with the Laserjet line, and with other printers that incorporate Canon SX or CX print engines. There are two ways to print with Conographic: in the Personalscript mode, which does not interpret PostScript but simulates PostScript output; or in the Conoscript mode, which prints documents that contain PostScript files. Personalscript is fast and will print most PC graphics. Conoscript, which uses a math coprocessor, is fast, but it needs time for exiting and reloading software.

Laserwriter IINTX: Apple Computer, Inc

Article Abstract:

The Laserwriter IINTX laser printer, from Apple Computer, is a sophisticated PostScript laser printer, which is priced at $6,599. This 68020-based product includes a 2Mbyte memory supply, which is upgradable to 12Mbytes; and there is an SCSI port for an optional hard disk. Characters print cleanly, and blacks are solid, though there is some blotchiness. Unfortunately, the printer does not have a parallel port, so that slower serial communications between printer and PC are necessary.

MT 910 Universal Publishing System: Mannesmann Tally Corp

Article Abstract:

The $5,495 MT 910 Universal Publishing System, from Mannesmann Tally Corp, sounds like a formidable competitor. The laser engine claims a print rate of ten pages a minute, and the controller is based on a 20-MHz 68000 chip. Nevertheless, perfomance in a test based on a Ventura document turned in a 'lackluster' performance. Software compatibility and PostScript imitation are are described as identical to Imagen's Publisher Kit. The MT 910's print quality is called 'excellent'.
