Cooking up your own CD-ROMs: follow this recipe to turn your raw ingredients into a well-done CD-ROM

Article Abstract:

The second in a series of articles on creating one's own CD-ROM details the processes of premastering the CD-ROM and sending out of data for mastering and duplication of the disk. Before premastering, the target data on the hard disk must be named, indexed, formatted and optimized for one of the standard CD-ROM file formats. Premastering converts that data into a software implementation of the digital image that will be burned into the CD-ROM. A variety of CD-ROM premastering software is available for do-it-yourself production digital image production, or a CD-ROM preparation service can handle the process. The digital image can be sent to the mastering and duplication service on a variety of storage media. An $8,000-plus desktop CD-ROM recorder can produce a one-off CD-ROM that can also provide the disk image for production of multiple copies. The cost of duplicating CD-ROMs generally runs about $2 each for the first 200 copies to $1.25 each for over 1,000 copies.

The fine art of filters

Article Abstract:

Seven images demonstrate the design possibilities in electronic art offered by powerful plug-in filters for such image-editing software packages as Adobe Photoshop. Designer Bill Niffenegger used Adobe Photoshop, Fractal Design Painter (FDP) and HSC Software's Kai's Power Tools filters to achieve the visual quality of natural media. Kai Krause employed filters from the same products to enrich the appearance of fractal images. Ruth Kedar used Photoshop and Andromeda Series 1 filters to disperse and blend images in a scanned and tiled photograph. Krin Scholz achieved dramatic contrasts in the image of a theater through the use of Photoshop and Aldus Gallery Effects, Volume 1 (AGE-1). Nance Paternoster employed Watercolor and Ripple filters from Photoshop, FDP and AGE-1 to create a moody electronic painting. Ed Bergmann experimented with Photoshop and AGE-1 filters to achieve a airy, diffused image.

Triple vision

Article Abstract:

Rick Smolan, the author of 'From Alice to Ocean: Alone Across the Outback,' used Kodak's new Photo compact disc technology to have his book published in three forms: book, interactive Apple CD-ROM and Photo CD. Graf/X produced the book using Kodak's CD Access software, Adobe Photoshop and a Macintosh Quadra 950 for on-screen editing. The book was desktop published using Aldus PageMaker. Magnum Design created the interactive Apple CD-ROM version by bringing the images into Photoshop, dithering them to the system palette and then cropping and retouching them for the Macintosh. Magnum also created base maps using Adobe Illustrator. Kodak produced the Photo CD version by printing Photo CD images and then cutting and pasting, also adding audio and more graphics. The book, which will retail for $50, including the CD-ROM and Photo CDs for free, will be available Dec 1, 1992.
